The constituency of National Assembly seat NA-258 (Malir, Karachi) largely comprises of indigenous rural and suburban neighborhoods, and industrial areas, and a majority of the voters are either labourers or associated with the profession of agriculture and fisheries. Results of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) indicate that this constituency is one of the constituencies where Pakistan People's Party (PPP) easily wins ,but in upcoming election situation is quite different as a ten political parties alliance is preparing to come with a common candidate against the PPP. The areas included in the constituency are Sherpao Colony, Muslimabad and Muzafferabad areas of Landhi, Ibrahim Haideri, Rehri Goth, Cattle Colony, Gulshen-e-Hadeed, Bin Qasim, Gaggar, Kator, Memon Goth and Sindhi and Baloch villages situated in Malir and Gadap.

NA-258 is going to be one of the richest and most prosperous localities of Karachi, and may become an education hub in the future because of the establishment of a chain of universities and IT centres. Because of its prime location and because it is spread over several acres, and has one of the country’s second major ports, Port Mohammad Bin Qasim. There is a vast potential for this area to grow. It is on the borderline of Karachi and has a vast industrial and export processing zone. It has part of the city’s vital coastline, several mills and factories, and several units which have been set up with foreign assistance. It has the country’s major steel mills, established with the cooperation of Russia . It begins from Ibrahim Hyderi, runs along the coastline, crosses the National Highway and extends up to the Superhighway in the north. A vast area of the constituency is under cultivation and the agricultural area begins at Memon Goth and extends till Kathore in the Kirthar National Park. However, agriculture suffered during the last decade owing to the drought situation and no rainfall, after which people started migrating to other areas.
According to ECP ,The number of registered votes in NA 258 during election were 418663 of which 171807 votes were polled ,this means 41.03%of the registered votes were cast. Sher Muhammad Baloch of Pakistan people's party ( parliamentarians) won the election with 134696 votes ,followed by Nisar Ahmed Shar of Mutahida Qaumi Movement with 15017 votes and Abu Bakar Memon an independent candidates with 11505 votes. http://www2.ecp.gov.pk/vsite/complete/Search.aspx

According to ECCP ,In 2002 election 19 candidates were contesting from the constituency. Out of 263393 Total registered votes, turnover of casting votes was 108889 or 41.3% votes. Sher Muhammad Baloch of Pakistan people's party ( parliamentarians) won the election with 38225 votes ,while the runner up was an independent candidate , Abdul Hakeem Baloch who got 27903,followed by Mutahida Majlis- e Amal's candidate Maulana Abdul Shakoor Khairpuri with 17630 votes.

According to Sher Muhammad Baloch's profile, he was born on September 1, 1944 in Daud Goth Malir, Karachi. He has been elected for his second term as MNA. He is politically affiliated with PPPP. After graduating from Jamia Millia, Malir, Karachi, he has worked in the industry of transportation. Married and father of a son and a daughter, he has travelled to the U.S.A and his hobbies include listening to old music, and watching old films.

A Sindh-level alliance of ten political parties which is taking part in upcoming elections is set to break the PPP's traditional votebank in NA-258. The alliance that includes Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PMLF), Jamiat-e-Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Jammat-e-Islami and Sindhi nationalist parties are preparing to come up with a joint candidate to defeat PPP in the constituency. “PPP-led government has badly failed do deliver to the people of this constituency and now it is time to change our representative, PML-N local leaders said, claiming that they are giving an alternative leadership in upcoming polls which will solve the basic problems facing by the residents of the constituency. However PPP leaders are very optimistic that they will win the seat again. "NA-258 is a stronghold of PPP and the people of the constiteuncy will again vote the PPP's candidate," said Shah Jahan Khan, Karachi coordination secretary of PPP.
By March 24, not a single party has finalized thier candidates from NA-258 for upcoming polls but Abdul Hakeem Baloch, a candidate from PML-N and possibly backed by alliance of ten political parties, and PPP's candidate be key contesters from the constituency in upcoming polls. It is pertinent to mention that Abdul Hakeem Baloch enjoys a strong political and social support in constituency and he was runner up in 2002 election as a independent candidate. He was formerly associated with PPP and recently left the party on creating differences over a local bodies bill. Local political observers believe that Abul Hakeem Baloch, with support of ten parties , can change the trend by defeating PPP's candidate in this election. On the other hand, PPP's leadership are also aware about recent development and they are fielding a strong candidate instead of Sher Muhammad Baloch, the incumbent MNA, PPP's local leaders say. They opine that Sher Muhammad Baloch is now an aged politician and not comfortable to run election campaign easily. Also voters of the constituency are not happy with him. According to PPP sources, PPP’s leadership has three name to discuss a final candidate for NA-258. The names includes Raja Abdul Razzaq, Salam Murad or Ghulam Murtaza . Political analysts of this constituency believe that first time in the history of this constituency, PPP will face a tough contest in upcoming election.
